GendAi
The GendAi project is an Erasmus+ Sport initiative promoting gender equality in and through Aikido, with a special focus on creating dojo environments that are more attractive and welcoming for women.
The project engages female practitioners and instructors to collect insights, data, and best practices from across Europe. Through research and interviews with experienced female instructors, it identifies practical measures and training approaches that help increase and retain female participation in Aikido.
The project focused on collecting data, information and experience from practitioners of the three Romanian, Dutch and Slovenian aikido federations, including high level (female and male) instructors. As a first step, a questionnaire was prepared to establish a database of common knowledge. Based on the result, measures to create female-friendly dojo were introduced and tested in the dojo of the three aikido federations:
Jan. 2020: Project launched; extended by one year due to pandemic.
Sept. 2021: First partners' meeting held in Amsterdam.
Nov. 2021: International Gender Event in Cluj-Napoca, Romania (Seminar by Micheline Tissier Shihan).
Mar. 2022: Partners met in Ljubljana, Slovenia (Seminar by Satomi Ishikawa and Irina Gaspar).
Sept. 2022: Final partners' meeting in Romania (Seminar by Satomi Ishikawa and Stasa Pisek).
After one year of experience, the best practices Guidelines for creating female-friendly training environments were drawn with the aim to increase and retain the number of female aikido practitioners.
The result of the projects is an online Guidelines on how to create female-friendly training environments in dojo. It is accessible for all practitioners and instructors and has been widely spread in the European Aikido Federation's network, as well as in social media.
The Guidelines contain targeted and tested measures which are easy to understand and implement. It targets both current and potential practitioners with the aim of retaining women in the dojo and attracting more female practitioners.
